A new car helped Lubomír Jakubík to win the Endurance championship

A Slovak driver Lubomír Jakubík used to race with Ferrari cars in the past. However, his prancing horse was not fast enough, so he switched to BMW Alpina B6 GT3 together with Trevor Racing. And it worked – he won the Endurance championship and fought for the Sprint championship victory until the very last round.

You had been fighting with Tomáš Erdélyi all season long, you almost won the Sprint championship and took an overall victory in the Endurance GT3 Trophy championship. How would you describe this season?
Very positively. There was always something to fight for and I and Tomáš drove very clean and fair races. We were both winning races but in the end, it turned out better for me and I won the Endurance championship.

You raced together with Gregor Zsigo, how that worked?
Gregor is a great teammate, he doesn’t make mistakes and we work really well together.

Which win was the best one?
Definitely the home win – at Slovakia Ring, especially the Sprint race on Sunday. I was fighting with Tomáš since the first turn and it was so difficult to keep him behind in such a heat.

And when was the worst time for you behind the wheel?
At Brno in the first Sprint race, when I raced with broken ribs. We needed to stay in the championship lead, but after the crash, which was not out fault, the championship was over for us.

Which circuit suits you the most?
It has always been Hungaroring – a very difficult circuit from a technical perspective. I really like it.

You had been racing with Ferrari Challenge in the past, but this year you drove with BMW Alpina. Why the change? And how would you compare both cars?
Ferrari Challenge is an amazing car, but it is not as fast as the new Lamborghini Huracán in the GTC category. It’s slower, so we went for BMW Alpina B6 GT3 in the GT3 Trophy. There is a big difference in the weight balance and it requires a different driving style. As BMW has its engine in the front, unlike Ferrari which has it at the back, it is hard to compare. But also Alpina is a proper race car, while the Ferrari is a civilian car modified for racing.

What plans do you have for the next season?
I don’t have any plans just yet, we will start discussing them soon.
