Mičánek Motorsport’s Josef Záruba has managed to defend his championship crown in the GTC category. At first, he struggled with his new Lamborghini Huracán ST EVO car, but in the second half of the season, it was a different story. And he clinched the title in front of a home crowd.
This year has brought you the ESET Sprint championship title in the GTC category again. How happy are you with the way your season went?
The first year with a new car is always difficult. It made it even bigger challenge for me and the whole team. We struggled a bit at the beginning, as it was a brand new car, but in the second half of the season there was a really great teamwork and I just took it easy in a very well prepared car. A big thanks goes to Mičánek Motorsport!
You had a big competitor in Dennis Waszek, who won three races in the row in the middle of the year. How difficult it was to compete against him?
I’m always glad to race someone. I had Jedlinsky at Red Bull Ring, where I had to risk a bit more when passing backmarkers and, unfortunately, that was also the end of the race for me. I really enjoyed battles with Dennis at Grobnik. We passed each other several times on that tight circuit and both races there were amazing. He was a great competitor, a hard one but also fair!
It was in Brno when you took your first overall victory after a huge battle with GT3 cars and prototypes. How difficult it was to keep all those cars behind?
Brno was our home race. We had a lot of friends and sponsors there, so the race had a very unique atmosphere and to finally take the overall win, I think it was a brilliant way how to end the year after all the hard work. I had a great start and then it was just about not making any mistakes, which was difficult. Especially with Richard Chlad jr. flashing me all the race, I had been fighting him all season long! But we did it and we could celebrate.
Which win do you think was the best one?
I really liked the race number two at Slovakia. I had a great start and managed to stay in the lead for a long time despite I felt really bad before the race. And Brno of course!
Which circuit suited you the most this season?
Definitely Slovakia Ring!
What are your plans for the next season?
We’re working on entering the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe, but nothing is certain just yet. It depends on our budget.
