Move from karts gave Michal Makeš a fairy-tale season

Just a year ago Michal Makeš was still racing in karts. But for 2018, he has moved to bigger cars and bigger circuits. He had joined Mičánek Motorsport and it was a fairy-tale since then. He dominated Renault Clio category in a way nobody did expect. Six wins in a row and a Clio Cup champion, that just shows how talented driver he is.

You have managed to win six races in the row at the beginning of the year. Was it really that easy?
No, it was not easy at all! Despite it might have looked like that! I had managed to get used to everything pretty quickly and then it was about making no mistakes and handling the pressure in every race.

Since Slovakia Ring, it seemed to be a bit worse for you. Was it your plan or just the competition got better?
The competition got faster and I began to drive more carefully. I couldn’t make myself to drive on the limit. My only goal was to win the Clio Cup and I didn’t want to make a mistake and lose my advantage.

Your first season went very well – you won the championship. Did this possibility cross your mind at the beginning of the year?
At the beginning of the season, I thought that finishing on a podium would be awesome and winning a race would be unbelievable. But winning the championship? That didn’t cross my mind at all.

Which win was the best one?
Both wins at Red Bull Ring. We had the biggest Renault field in a whole year and I enjoyed a plenty of battles, more than in any other race. It was a huge experience.

You had never raced on any of the circuits before, which suited you the most?
My best circuit was the Red Bull Ring. A very fast track, with a technical middle sector, which is so much fun. Also, there are big elevation changes so you feel like on a roller coaster. Such a beautiful track.

What plans do you have for the next season?
That’s something that I and my team will take a look at during winter testing. But my main goal is to start the new year by passing the final maturita exams at school!
