Miro Konopka was one of the oldest drivers of ESET V4 Cup at Grobnik, Croatia. But you would not be able to guess that if you looked at his results. He can be pretty fast with his Lamborghini Huracan GT3! Konopka currently sits 3rd in the Sprint championship standings and 2nd in the Endurance championship.
Miro, did you also use the opportunity of being in Croatia to take some time off?
I was only there for the race. Last week we went to Spa, now we’re here and then we have to go straight to the Slovakia Ring. Actually, I’m going to spend the next ten weekends at the circuits. It’s a summer full of racing for me.
How difficult is it to have such a busy schedule?
My wife says that I’m like a husband for hire because I leave on Wednesdays and return on Mondays! (laugh) But I love racing. Of course, it is much better over the winter when I have only one race per month. In the end, it depends only on you; how busy you will make it for yourself. I race in many different series only because I want to, it’s because of that atmosphere. The only real difficulty is to handle it all as a manager. It’s a lot of work, but I’ll have time to relax over the winter.
What actually drives you? What is behind your motivation?
Wow, I’m not sure if I know the answer to this. (laugh) Maybe it’s because I like having a good momentum. Sometimes I think about having two or three weeks off as I’m a bit older and I don’t need to drive so much. But being one of the oldest drivers means, that it feels very good to be able to compete with the younger ones. I started very late, maybe when I was in an age that is more common for retiring. And when you have here the Top 6 drivers in less than a half a second, it’s clear that everybody is pushing and it’s very difficult. So being able to race with the young guys and to be competitive on such a level, that’s what drives me.
